Description
Lavender Orpington Chicken
TheÂ
Lavender Orpington Chicken is a beautiful color variety of the popular Orpington breed, developed from English bloodlines and admired for its softÂ
lavender-gray plumage and gentle personality. Like other Orpingtons, this variety is recognized for its usefulness as aÂ
dual-purpose bird, valued for bothÂ
egg production and meat quality.
Cackle Hatchery® offers theÂ
production-type Lavender Orpington, bred for steady laying performance and calm temperament rather than show. These birds are large and stately, with hens generally weighing aroundÂ
8 pounds and roosters reaching aboutÂ
10 pounds, while pullets and cockerels are slightly lighter. Their fluffy feathering gives them a rounded, elegant appearance that makes them a favorite in backyard flocks.
Lavender Orpingtons are known for beingÂ
docile, friendly, and easy to handle, often described as one of the most people-oriented chicken breeds. They adapt well toÂ
confinement or free-range systems and are especially popular with families and first-time chicken keepers. Hens are goodÂ
setters and are often devoted mothers when allowed to brood and raise chicks naturally.
Egg production is reliable, with hens laying an estimatedÂ
150 to 250 large, light brown eggs per year (production estimates only; see FAQ), depending on care and environment. They prefer aÂ
roost height of two to four feet and do best with a breeding ratio of aboutÂ
nine females to one male, with fertility typically ranging betweenÂ
60 and 75 percent.
Cackle Hatchery® has been developing itsÂ
Lavender Orpington strain for many years, focusing on strong laying ability, good fertility, and the calm temperament that makes Orpingtons so popular. At select times of the year, we also offerÂ
fertile hatching eggs andÂ
started pullets for this breed.
